Description

Medical and surgical journal of Her Majesty's convict ship David Clark for between 29 April and 9 October 1841 by Edward Jeffery, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in a voyage to Van Diemen's Land.

Folios 1-8: A copy of the daily sick book.

Folios 9-11: Alexander McRea, aged 40, convict; case number 1; disease, bronchitis. Put on sick list, 18 May 1841. Discharged 13 July 1841.

Folios 11-:13 John Timbers, aged 19, private 96th Regiment of foot; case number 2; disease, febris. Put on sick list, 6 June 1841 at sea. Died 14 June1841.

Folios 14-15: Samuel French, aged 28, convict; case number 3; disease, enteritis. Put on sick list, 15 June 1841 at sea. Discharged 25 June 1841.

Folios 15-16: Silas Pitman, aged 34, convict; case number 4; disease, ophthalmia. Put on sick list, 16 June 1841. Discharged 1 July 1841.

Folios 16-21: Thomas Coles, aged 24, convict: case number 5; disease, ophthalmia. Put on sick list, 20 June 1841. Discharged to hospital 7 October 1841.

Folios 22-25: John Williams, aged 39, convict; case number 6; disease, ophthalmia. Put on sick list, 7 July 1841. Discharged to hospital 7 October 1841.

Folio 25: George Lilly, aged 43, convict; disease, ophthalmia. Put on sick list, 13 July 1841. Discharged to hospital 7 October 1841.

Folios 25-31: Robert Pointer, aged 19, private 96th Regiment of foot; case number 8; disease, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 15 June 1841. Died 6 September 1841.

Folio 31: nosological synopsis of the David Clark's sick book kept during the period of the journal.

Folios 27-29: Surgeon's general remarks. The David Clark Convict ship left Portsmouth on 13 May 1841 with 158 convicts, embarking an further 150 from Plymouth making a total of 308 male prisoners. All appeared generally in a tolerable state of health and arrived at Hobart on 4 October 1841 making a passage of four months having left Plymouth at the beginning of June. A school was established on board and at the period of embarkation, 47 of the prisoners could neither read nor write, once at the termination of the voyage, 18 could read and write a little, 15 could read very well and 12 tolerably well.
