1819
Medical and surgical journal and other occurrences of His Majesty's convict ship Daphne for 20 May to 28 September 1819 by Lancelot Armstrong, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in the Cove of Cork and a passage to New South Wales. The journal is in diary form with daily entries recording symptoms and treatments in the morning and again at 6pm in the evening. There are no individual entries for patients, or dates when they are discharged from the sick list, entries mention names or numbers of patients, the daily symptoms and the treatment prescribed, often in an abbreviated form. There are daily observations of wind strength and direction, and weather but the position of the ship is not recorded except when land is sighted. Daily routine, such as issuing of wine or cleaning the decks, and regular events, such as Divine Service, are also recorded. There is no abstract of cases but there are a couple of paragraphs of general remarks in the final diary entry.
