Description

Medical and surgical journal of the Bussorah Merchant convict ship for 26 August 1829 to 4 February 1830 by H. Anderson, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in taking male convicts to Van Dieman's Land.

Folios 1-3: Joseph Price, aged 21, convict; case number 1; disease or hurt, fever. Put on sick list, 1 October 1829 at Sheerness. Died 10 November 1829.

Folio 3: James Hixon, aged 26, soldier 63rd Regiment; case number 2; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 31 October 1829 at sea. Discharged 20 November 1829 to duty.

Folio 4: John McQueen, aged 22, soldier; case number 3; disease or hurt, hoemoptysis phthisis. Put on sick list, 31 October 1829 at sea. Died 1 January 1830.

Folio 5: George Lees, aged 32, convict; case number 4; disease or hurt, hydrothorax. Put on sick list, 14 December 1829 at sea. Died 23 December 1829.

Folios 5-6: Sarah Siddons, aged 16 months, passenger (soldier's child); case number 5; disease or hurt, atrophia. Put on sick list, 14 December 1829 at sea. Died 16 December 1829.

Folio 6: Thomas Wilson, aged 26, convict; case number 6; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 9 January 1830 at sea. Discharged 21 January 1830 to duty.

Folio 7: A numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.

Folio 8: Surgeon's general remarks. Thermometer weather readings (mean, high, low) for September 1829 to January 1830. Passage from England to Van Dieman's Land took 104 days. On 27 January 1830, 198 convicts were landed at Hobart Town.
