Description

Medical journal of the Bride, convict ship from 4 April to 23 June 1851 by John McElliott, Surgeon Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in conveying 200 convicts from Kingstown, Dublin to Bermuda.

Folios 4-5: case no 1, David Henderson, aged 20, Private 72nd Regiment; taken ill at Dublin; sick or hurt, pneumonia, complained of suddenly seized with pain in the right breast, which increased by inspiration and a frequent on convulsive cough; put on sick list 23 April 1851, sent 24 April 1851 to Military Hospital.

Folios 5-6: case no 2, Robert Kiggan, aged 18, Private 56th Regiment; taken ill at Dublin; sick or hurt, carditis, with pulse very frequent and incompressible averaging from 100 to 110 in the minute, tongue furred, bowels irregular of late rather constipated, skin dry and increased in temperature; put on sick list 8 May 1851, discharged 14 May 1851 well.

Folios 6-7: case no 3, Patrick Wallis, aged 19, Prisoner; taken ill at [Sea?]; sick or hurt, diarrhoea, complained of repeatedly purged in the night each dejection preceded by a sense of weight in the lower belly, stools feculent attended by griping pain; put on sick list 15 May 1851, discharged 19 May 1851 duty.

Folios 7-8: case no 4, Edward Condon, aged 40, Convict; taken ill at Sea; sick or hurt, dysenteria, sickness of stomach, frequent and painful purging, appetite bad, accompanied by a constipation state of the bowels; put on sick list 27 May 1851, discharged 16 June 1851 recovered.

Folio 9: case no 5, John Kilmurry, aged 27, Convict; taken ill at Sea; sick or hurt, ophthalmia, inflamed left eye, the conjunctiva was vascular the superficial vessels having a bright tinge, the eye was watery and intolerant of light; put on sick list 6 June 1851, sent 23 June 1851 to Hospital Ship at Bermuda.

Folio 10: case no 6, Thomas Morissy, aged 23, Convict; taken ill at Sea; sick or hurt, impetigo, with spots on the back part of the neck presenting a ring appearance of about the size of a six pence, the margin was of small red pimples inflamed and discharging a thin arid looking fluid which when the body was heated produced considerable itching; put on sick list 17 June 1851, sent 23 June 1851 to Convict Hospital Ship Bermuda.

Folios 12-13: Surgeon's general remarks. The Bride was carrying convicts from Kingstown, Dublin, to Bermuda filled at Deptford and sailed on 15 April, the ship was previously well washed with Chloride of Lime Solution as directed by Admiralty order on 21 of the same month, 200 convicts were embarked at Dublin on the 7 & 9 May who the Surgeon observed were in good health. The Surgeon stated that the cases placed on the sick list were mostly of a trifling nature.
