Description

Medical journal of the Asia convict ship from 3 October 1827 to 24 March 1828 by James McTernan, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in conveying male convicts to Sydney.

Folios 1-2: case no 1; Lieutenant Edwards, lieutenant 57th regiment, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, cholera morbus; put on sick list 8 December 1827, discharged 15 December 1827 to duty.

Folios 2-3, 5: case no 2; Patrick Coade, aged 18, private 57th regiment, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, incipient phthisis; put on sick list 14 December 1827, discharged 14 January 1828 to duty.

Folio 4: case no 3; William Eldridge, aged 16, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list 14 December 1827, discharged 29 December 1827 cured.

Folio 4: case no 4; William Dockerel, aged 30, private 57th regiment, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pneumonia; put on sick list 22 December 1827, discharged 6 January 1828 to duty.

Folios 5-6: case no 5; John Digney, aged 37, private of veteran battalion New South Wales corps, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, cholera morbus; put on sick list 1 January 1828, discharged 12 January 1828 to duty.

Folio 6: case no 6; Peter Hamelton, aged 47, convict, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, hemoptysis; put on sick list 4 January 1828, discharged 11 January 1828 cured.

Folio 7: case no 7; Richard Coates, aged 19, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, cynanche tonsillaris; put on sick list 10 January 1828, discharged 29 January 1828 cured.

Folio 8: case no 8; Henry Nichols, aged 24, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list 14 January 1828, discharged 24 January 1828 cured.

Folios 8-9: case no 9; Thomas Ward, aged 24, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, ophthalmia; put on sick list 26 January 1828, discharged 28 February 1828 cured.

Folio 10: case no 10; John McMahon, private 57th regiment, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysentery followed by continue fever; put on sick list 26 January 1828, discharged 6 February 1828 to duty.

Folio 11: case no 11; Benjamin Barkstag, aged 22, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list 1 February 1828, discharged 14 February 1828 cured.

Folios 11-12: case no 12; John White, aged 27, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list 4 February 1828, discharged 16 February 1828 cured.

Folios 12-13: case no 13; Mary Ives, aged 27, soldier's wife, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list 27 February 1828, discharged 14 March 1828 cured and went on shore at Sydney.

Folios 14-15, 17: case no 14; Ann Taylor, aged 22, soldier's wife, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, constipation; put on sick list 29 February 1828, discharged 14 March 1828 cured.

Folios 16-17: case no 15; Thomas Quinn, aged 27, private veteran, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pneumonia; put on sick list 2 March 1828, discharged 14 March 1828 cured.
