Description

Medical and surgical journal of the Arab convict ship, for 16 May to 24 November 1822 by Charles Carter, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed on a voyage to Terra Australasia.

Folios 1-4: William Boast, convict; disease or hurt, erysipelas biliosum. Put on sick list, 23 July 1822 at sea. Died 3pm on 28 July 1822.

Folios 4-9: Edward Bury, convict; disease or hurt, febris. Put on sick list, 25 July 1822 at sea. Died 5pm on 5 August 1822.

Folios 9-11: James Say, convict; disease or hurt, febris. Put on sick list, 8 August 1822 at sea. Discharged 13 August 1822 cured.

Folios 11-12: John Sewell, convict; disease or hurt, febris. Put on sick list, 9 August 1822 at sea. Discharged 18 August 1822 cured.

Folios 12-14: James Wells, convict; disease or hurt, hydrothorax. Put on sick list, 21 October 1822 at sea. Died 2am on 25 October 1822.

Folio 14: The whole of the convicts 152 in number were on the 12 November 1822 disembarked at Hobart Town on the River Derwent, three having died on the voyage, and one returned sick at the convict hulk at Portsmouth previous to leaving England. [Signed] Charles Carter, Surgeon, RN.

Folios 15-45: Blank.

Folio 46: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.
