Description

Medical and surgical journal of His Majesty's hired convict ship Andromeda for 29 October 1832 to 29 March 1833 by David Boyter, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in conveying convicts to New South Wales.

Folios 1-2: John Groves, aged 24, convict; case number 1; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 4 December 1832 at sea. Died 9 December 1832.

Folio 2: Job Blunt, aged 24, convict; case number 2; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 4 December 1832 at sea. Discharged 15 December 1832 cured.

Folios 2-3: George Kinggate, aged 20, convict; case number 3; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 10 December 1832 at sea. Died 29 December 1832.

Folios 3-6: James Collins, aged 20, convict; case number 4; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 9 December 1832 at sea. Discharged 10 February 1833 cured.

Folios 6-7: James Parker, aged 21; case number 5; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 25 December 1832 at sea. Discharged 28 February 1833 cured.

Folio 7: James Whitin, aged 24, convict; case number 6; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 30 December 1832 at sea. Discharged 20 January 1833 cured.

Folio 8: J Sams, aged 19, convict; case number 7; disease or hurt, dysenteria. Put on sick list, 29 January 1833 at sea. Discharged 12 February 1833 cured.

Folio 8: Henry Cairns, aged 22, private, 21st Regiment; case number 8; disease or hurt, rheumatismus. Put on sick list, 29 January 1833 at sea. Discharged 1 February 1833 cured.

Folios 8-9: J Chamberlain, aged 22, convict; case number 9; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 29 December 1832 at sea. Discharged 27 February 1833 cured.

Folio 9: William Hastings, aged 19, convict; case number 10; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 11 February 1833 at sea. Discharged 24 February 1833 cured.

Folios 10-11: John Baker, aged 22, convict; case number 11; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 13 February 1833 at sea. Died 28 February 1833.

Folios 11-12: A Taylor, aged 22, convict; case number 12; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 15 February 1833 at sea. Discharged 12 March 1833 cured.

Folio 12: A numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.

Folio 13: Surgeon's general remarks. The guard employed on this service consisted of twenty nine men of the 21 Regiment. Voyage took sixteen weeks. The convicts were in number 186 and were received from the York hulk at Portsmouth. Surgeon makes reference to two of his 'former voyages'.
