Papers of the Commissioners for Inquiring into Charities created during their investigations in England and Wales in the period 1817-1850. These papers formed the basis for their Printed Reports. Also included in the series are supplementary miscellaneous papers, legal papers, minute books, reports and returns, letter books, correspondence etc, commissions and miscellanea. Some bundles contain transcripts of earlier documents examined by the Commissioners and then returned to the Trustees.

Custodial history (Describes where and how the record has been held from creation to transfer to The National Archives)

The papers were originally transferred to the Public Record Office in 1842 but returned to the Charity Commissioners in 1856. After a brief period at the Intermediate Repository at Hayes they were re-transferred in September 1953 with the addition of certain papers relating to the 1849 Commission. In November 1962, they were returned to the Charity Commission and were finally passed back to the Public Record Office in 1997.
