Description

Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Isle of Ely, Huntingdonshire. 'A Mapp of ye Great Levell of ye Fenns extending into ye Countyes of Northampton, Norfolk, Suffolke, Lyncolne, Cambridge & Huntington & the Isle of Ely as it is now drained, described by. Sr Jonas Moore Surveyr genll'. Shows fens, waterways, dykes, woods, commons, roads, parks (including 'Coll Cromwell's parck' near Ramsey Mere), landowners' names, mills, churches etc; acreage; lots identified by number (no key). Engraved. 2 inches to 1 mile [1:36,680]; scale runs along borders. Cardinal points in borders. Title in cartouche representing a wall. Arms [?of Fifth Earl of Bedford's Company for Draining the Fens] above title. Four sheets, each 100 cm x 70.5 cm, dissected and mounted on linen; marbled endpapers with labels affixed which identify quarters of the map; folded into case (now damaged) bearing label '2A/81'. Printed and sold by Christopher Browne 'at the Globe near the West end of St Pauls Church, London': Browne was in business at this address from 1688 until about 1712 (see Sarah Tyacke, London Map Sellers 1660-1720 (Tring, 1978)). Parish boundaries east of the Bedford River and north of the Old Welney and Brandon rivers are highlighted in red ink; other additions in red ink relate to assessed lands; pencilled additions relate to rights of the Crown, including an allotment in lieu of tithes; green, blue and pink washes.
