Description

1 item (originally illustrating a report by Harry Parkes on the progress of the Satsuma rebellion, 19 March 1877) extracted from FO 46/217 (folio 144). Japan: Kyushu. 'Map of the neighbourhood of Kumamoto': showing towns, rivers, mountains and roads; (the territory covered is now in Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Saga prefectures); in Japanese. Key. Scale: 6 bu to 1 ri [approximately 1 inch to 3.5 miles]. Compass indicator. Produced by Tadataka Ino; published by Shushu-Kan. Inset: plan of the town and castle of Kumamoto; compass indicator. MS additions, coloured, marking [old] provincial boundaries, and rendering the title, place names and key into English; MS key to rebel strongholds.
