2 items (originally illustrating a report, by Vice-Consul G B Samson, on the development of Hokkaido) extracted from FO 371/2388 (folios 107-108). Japan: Hokkaido. 2 maps showing towns, mountains, lakes, etc, and the boundaries of [old] provinces, with names; item 2 also showing rivers and railways. Scale: (1) 1 inch to about 21 miles; (2) 1 inch to about 15 miles (both calculated). Compass indicator to item 1. Inset (to both items): map of the Kuril Islands (now part of the Russian Federation). Dimensions: (1) 27 cm x 30 cm, on sheet 33 cm x 33.5 cm; (2) 47.5 cm x 65 cm. Report and maps originally enclosed in despatch number 4 from Samson to Sir Conyngham Greene, Tokyo, 20 February 1915; subsequently enclosed in [Foreign Office] despatch number 51, 3 March 1915; placed in Foreign Office file number 43913: 'Japan. Development of Hokkaido by the Japanese': 14 April [19]15.
