(1a) Map of the area around Kagoshima, showing roads, rivers, mountains, [?] nearby towns (numbered), [old] province names, and islands to the south. Scale: 1 inch to about 25 miles (calculated). Compass indicator. (1b) Key to symbols; affixed to item 1a. Dimensions: (1a) 32.5 cm x 78.5 cm; (1b) 6.5 cm x 11.5 cm. Originally enclosed in a memorandum by George J L Hodges, Nagasaki, 1 January 1876; subsequently enclosed in Foreign Office despatch number 5 from Marcus Flowers, British Consulate, Nagasaki, to Sir Harry Parkes, 8 January 1876.
