3 items (originally accompanying a report into the foreign settlement at Hakodate, by James J Enslie) extracted from FO 46/54. Japan: Yezo (now Hokkaido): Hakodate. 3 sheets of plans and drawings. (1) 'Plan of New Location': street plan showing properties, near the harbour, occupied by British firms. Scale: 1 inch to about 25 feet (measured). (2) Sheet bearing 2 plans and a drawing. (a) Street plan, including the Governor's former residence, embassies, the fort, the Custom House, and the new settlement; some buildings shown in perspective. (b) Japanese-style perspective view of the headland, showing houses and ships. (c) Japanese-style outline plan of the bay, showing relief, rivers, roads, and buildings, including the Governor's residence; scale: 1:40,625 (calculated). [By] James J Enslie, 11 March 1865. (3) 'Plan of New Settlement': street plan, giving house numbers and the occupiers of each plot; also showing the [Japanese] town and sea-front. Inset: plan of the area occupied by Dent and Co, and Lindsay and Co. Items 1 and 3 signed: Acting Consul James J Enslie. Dimensions: (1) 40 cm x 34 cm; (2) 62 cm x 73 cm; (3) 48 cm x 98 cm. Enslie's report, produced in answer to an enquiry by the House of Commons, was enclosed in a despatch from Charles Winchester, March 1865. Reference tables to item 3 remain with the parent document.
