Description

12 items extracted from FO 262/216. Japan. Map and 11 plans relating to the living conditions of Christians. (1-11) 11 sketch plans, labelled in Japanese, of Christian dwellings, with measurements. (1-6) At Kanazawa: (1) Kawagiwa - 4 [Riverside - 4]; (2) Kawagiwa Shingoya - 5 [Riverside New House - 5]; (3) Kawagiwa Shingoya - 6 [Riverside New House - 6]; (4) Tanigoya - 3 [Valley House - 3]; (5) Moto Oriya - 2 [former Weaving House - 2]; (6) Moto Yuya - 1 [former Bath House - 1]. Scale (1-6): 1 inch to about 1 foot. (7-8) At Daishoji: (7) Moto Rengeji [former Rengeji temple]; (8) an unidentified house. (9-11) At villages near Toyama: (9) Kyoriki-Mura; (10) Aida-Mura; (11) Naka-Ushi-Jima. (12) Sketch map of the route of the tour, undertaken by Mr Troup, through Echigo, Echiu, Kaga and Noto provinces (territory now in Fukui, Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures), investigating the living conditions of Christians; also showing settlements, rivers, hills, the coastline, etc, and Sado Island. Scale: 1 inch to about 15 miles (calculated). Cardinal points to items 6-7, 9-12. Sheet sizes between 28.5 cm x 36 cm and 112 cm x 40 cm. Originally enclosed in despatches from J Troup, British Consulate, Niigata: (1-11) number 22, 6 July 1871; (12) number 23, 18 July 1871.
