4 items extracted from FO 262/198. Japan. 4 sheets of maps and drawings. (1) Sketch maps of part of the coast of Echigo province (now part of Niigata prefecture), showing towns, rivers, mountains and the boundaries within which foreigners are restricted; small pieces of paper, affixed to the map, give distances. (2) View of Kusagura village. (3) Cross-section of Kusagura copper mine, giving the names of those in charge of parts of the works, with dates; small pieces of paper, affixed to the map, give additional information. (4) Sketch map of the route taken by J Troup on his journey through Echigo, Iwashiro and Uzen provinces (areas now in Fukushima, Niigata and Yamaguta prefectures). All compiled, from various sources, by J Troup, British Consulate, Niigata. Dimensions between 41.5 cm x 27 cm and 27 cm x 36 cm. (1) Originally enclosed in a letter from Troup to Sir Harry Parkes, 24 March 1870; (2-4) originally enclosed, with notes on his tour, in Troup's despatch number 22, 13 July 1870.
