Description

5 items extracted from FO 78/5260. Sinai Peninsula. 5 sketch maps showing the Suez Canal, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the frontier between Egypt and the Ottoman Empire, with place names, tracks, etc. (1-2, 5) 3 similar blueprints, marking the frontier between Aqaba (now in Jordan) and Rafah (now in the Gaza Strip); item 5 also in Arabic. Scale: 1 inch to 16 miles [1:1,013,760]. Compass and magnetic north indicators to items 2 and 5. Inset to all items: 'Sketch of two pillars & tree at Rafeh [i.e. Rafah]'. MS additional label to item 2: 'Appendix D'. (3) 'Turko-Egyptian Frontier East of Suez Key Map': negative photograph, covering a wider area, including the Nile Delta and the northern part of the Red Sea, with less detail; also marking the 'Ancient Limit' of Egypt. Scale: 1:4,000,000. Compass indicator. [By] J S Fenton. MS additional label: 'Appendix C'. (4) Negative photograph, apparently a copy of item 2. Dimensions: (1) 44 cm x 31.5 cm; (2) 46 cm x 31 cm; (3) 32.5 cm x 20 cm; (4) 46 cm x 33 cm; (5) 50.5 cm x 35 cm. (1) Originally enclosed in Lord Cromer's [despatch] number 37, 22 February 1900. (2) Originally illustrating: 'Memorandum on the Turko Egyptian Frontier' by Captain E H Hills, Royal Engineers, Deputy Assistant Adjutant General, Intelligence Division, War Office, 5 April 1900. (3-4) Originally filed with Foreign Office Confidential Print 497, May 1901. (5) Originally enclosed in Lord Cromer's [despatch] number 41 Confidential, 18 March 1906. The photograph on which the inset drawing to items 1-2 and 4-5 was based remains in the parent document (folio 294).
