Description

4 items extracted from FO 78/2663. European Turkey. 4 maps. (1) 'Sketch of the country around Silivri': showing the coastline, contours, cultivation, place names and communications. Scale: 2 inches to 1 mile [1:31,680]. (2) 'Sketch of the country around Rodosto [now Tekirdag]': showing details as item 1. Scale: 1 inch to 0.5 mile [1:31,680]. (3) 'Rough sketch of the coast from Kutchuk Tchekmedge [now spelled Kucukcekmece] to Jedi-Koule': showing soundings, roads, a railway, place names and major buildings. Scale: 2 inches to 1 mile [1:31,680]. (4) 'Sketch of coast of Sea of Marmara, near Makri-Keui': showing the area between Makri-Keui and Jedi-Koule. Scale: 1:10,560. Compass indicator to all items. Sketched and drawn by Captain J C Ardagh, Royal Engineers, HMS Helicon, Constantinople (now Istanbul), 23-29 November 1876; lithographed at the [Intelligence Branch], Quartermaster General's Department, 6 January 1877. Annotations: (1-2) 'Coast from [Admiralty] Chart No 224. Details by Eye Sketching. Heights by Aneroid'; (3) 'The outline is enlarged from French Military Map, and corrected and completed by observation.' Dimensions: (1) 38.5 cm x 33.5 cm; (2) 33.5 cm x 46 cm; (3) 33 cm x 49.5 cm; (4) 48 cm x 31 cm.
