Description

3 items (previously enclosed in Foreign Office files F280-281 concerning the Japanese Earthquake Disaster, 1 September 1923) extracted from FO 371/10305. Japan: Tokyo and Yokohama. 3 sheets of maps, plans and photographs detailing the effect of the earthquake and fire; in Japanese, with additions in English. (1) Plan of Tokyo City, on cloth, showing the port, docks, rivers, parks, buildings, roads, and railway lines and stations. Key to symbols. Compass indicator. Inset: plan of Yokohama harbour showing a breakwater, wharfs, rivers, roads, railways, buildings, and parks. MS additions, coloured, marking the area destroyed by fire. Endorsement: photographs of the destruction caused, and notes. (2) 'Annex No. 2. Map of Yokohama showing extent of fire': also showing wharfs, a breakwater, reclaimed land, rivers, roads, railway lines and stations, buildings, and a race course. Key to symbols. Compass indicator. MS additions, coloured, noting principal buildings and showing the area destroyed by fire. (3) 'Annex No. 1': Map of Yokohama, on cloth, showing areas docks, rivers, roads, railway station and line, buildings, parks, hills, and destroyed by fire. Endorsement: 'Map showing regions severely affected by earthquake of 1 September 1923': showing the area of central Honshu surrounding Tokyo, with the coastline, rivers, railways and towns. Key to places most severely damaged. MS additions, coloured. Dimensions: (1) 55 cm x 78 cm; (2) 55 cm x 77 cm; (3) 28.5 cm x 39.5 cm. Items 2 and 3 originally with a report by Mr R Boulter, Acting Consul-General, which was annex number 2 to Yokohama despatch number 66, 21 December [1923]; this despatch was subsequently enclosed in Tokyo despatch number 596, 27 December [1923].
