3 items (originally enclosed in James Miller's despatch, 27 August 1794) extracted from CO 217/110. Cape Breton Island (now part of Nova Scotia, Canada). 1 map and 2 sheets of plans. (1) 'Chart of Spanish or Sydney River in the Island of Cape Breton with a view to represent the situation and circumstances of the coal-ground': map also showing the coastline, heads, inlets and water depths. Reference notes to colouring and the direction of coal seams. Compass rose. (2) 'N:1. Plan of a key [i.e. a quay] at the coalery in Spanish River Cape Breton': showing the coastline, Indian Cove, a proposed pier, a proposed road connecting the pier to the [coal] mines, and high and low water levels. Note explaining the proposed site. Scale: 1 inch to about 40 yards. Compass indicator. (3) 2 plans on 1 sheet. 'N:2. Elevation of the peer [sic, pier] for Spanish River': also showing a road, a cliff, trees, the guard house, and high and low water levels. 'N:3 Section of two of the ledges of rocks according to the dotted line drawn across those represented in plate N:2'; reference table explaining the scale; scale: 1 inch to about 40 feet. All items endorsed: 'R 8 Oct. 1794 by the Halifax Packet'. Dimensions: (1) 37 cm x 44.5 cm; (2) 21.5 cm x 34.5 cm; (3) 18 cm x 34.5 cm.
