4 items (originally enclosed in a letter from Consul-General W H Wilkinson, Yunnanfu, to Sir Ernest Satow, British Ambassador, Peking (now Beijing), 11 June 1904) extracted from FO 228/1567. China. Yunnan. 4 maps relating to the proposed French railway between Yunnan-Sen (Yunnanfu, now Kunming) and Hanoi (now in Vietnam). (1-2) Map on 2 sheets, showing the line of the railway between the Chinese border at Lao Cai (now in Vietnam), and Yunnan-Sen, with place-names, waterways and contours. Scale: 1:100,000. Compass indicators. Produced by the Indo-China Geographical Service; printed June 1903. (3) 'Region de Lao Kay a Yun Nan Fou': map of southern Yunnan, showing the terrain, waterways, roads, place names, and the boundary with [French] Indo-China. Reference table (in French) to the meanings of Chinese place-name elements. Scale: 1:500,000. Compass indicators. Surveyed and drawn by 'le soldat Schneider, de 9me Colonial'; produced by the Indo-China Geographical Service; this edition November 1903. (4) MS, coloured, plan of Yunnanfu and environs, showing the sites of British and French consulates, the city walls, railway lines and stations, and a proposed French settlement. Scale: 1:20,000. Sheet sizes between 92.5 cm x 60 cm and 37 cm x 29 cm.
