Description

1 item extracted from CO 417/28. Southern Africa. 'Sketch map of a portion of the Bechuanaland Protectorate and country to the northwards as far as"Buluwayo [now Bulawayo] and Matabeleland" shewing roads traversed by His Honour"Sir Sidney Shippard" and partly, with the addition of further reliable information obtained from Mr Heaney, Supt. Bechd. Expn Comy [Bechuanaland Exploration Company], Mons[ieur] de Mafe, manager of the Tati Compy. [Company] and others 18th December 1888': also showing relief and drainage, vegetation, settlements, routeways, and lines of occupation; (the territory shown is now in Botswana and Zimbabwe). Reference table to the latitudes and longitudes of New Buluwayo, Tati, Mangwato, Molopolole, Machoudi, Limpopo and Ngotwani Junction. Scale: 1 inch to 20 miles. Reduced and drawn by F E von Hagen, Surveyor General's office, Vryburg. MS additional note: 'Copy C.Neumann Thomas AMICE'. Signed: H Goold-Adams, Major Commanding, Bechuanaland Border Police. Reproduction of a map recommended for use in the projected advance in April [?1888] of Sir F Carrington with a detachment of Bechuanaland police; originally accompanying a letter from Shippard, Administrator, British Bechuanaland, 24 January 1889; subsequently enclosed in [Governor and high commissioner Hercules] Robinson's [despatch] nubmer 101, 6 February 1889.
