Description

1 item extracted from FO 78/3831. South-east Europe. 'General-Karte der Europäischen Türkei': map (in German) of the area between Karlstadt (now Karlovac, Croatia), Kishinev (Chisinau, now in Moldova), the Sea of Marmara, and Preveza (now in Greece), showing rivers, roads, hachures and place names. Reference tables to sizes of cities and towns, and to Turkish place-name elements. Compiled and drawn by F Handtke; printed and published by C Fleming, Glogow. 6 insets: Montenegro (now part of Yugoslavia); northern Moldavia (now in Romania); Crete; Constantinople (now Istanbul); the Bosporus straits; the Dardanelles. MS additions, coloured, (in English), showing vilayet boundaries according to a statement presented by the Ottoman Commissioners, 14 August 1880. Further additions showing areas to be ceded to Greece, Montenegro and Serbia, by way of 'compensation' for the aggrandisement of Bulgaria by the annexation of Eastern Rumelia; reference table to compensatory areas; additions by Arthur Evans, MA, dated Oxford, 26 September [18]85. Originally enclosed in a letter from Consul A Baker, Suakin, 29 September 1885. An 'index' to the map remains in the parent document.
