Description

11 items extracted from FO 371/6404. (1)-(9) Russian language newspapers entitled 'Krasnii Iran' (Red Iran) (Organ of the Political Department, Persian Army). (1) Issue 17 for Monday 28 February 1921; (2) Issue 20 for Sunday 6 March 1921; (3) Issue 21 for Monday 7 March 1921; (4) Issue 27 for Wednesday 16 March 1921; (5) Issue 34 for Tuseday 24 March 1921; (6) Issue 31 for Monday 21 March 1921; (7) Issue 38 for Tuesday 29 March 1921; (8) Issue 39 for Wednesday 30 March 1921; (9) Issue 42 for Sunday 3 April 1921; (10)-(11) Persian (Farsi) newspapers in Arabic script entitled 'Iran Surq' (Red Iran) (the organ of the Revolutionary Committee of Gilan. (10) No. 6 of 27 March 1921; (11) No. 7 of 31 March 1921. These newspapers bears the date 1299 in Arabic, which appears to have been a miscalculation at the time of publication. The year 1299 AH (Anno Hegirae) equates to 1881. This newspaper dates from 1921. It seems that the date 1299 was arrived at by subtracting 622 (the year of the Hegira) from 1921, ignoring the fact that the Islamic year is 10 (or sometimes 11) days shorter than the Christian year. Between 622 and 1921, this annual discrepancy amonuts to about 40 years.
