Description

5 items (originally enclosed with various protocols of the Afghan Boundary Commission) extracted from FO 65/1327. Afghanistan; Turkestan (in Russia) (now Turkmenistan). Afghan Boundary Commission: Delimitation of the North-West Frontier. (1) ['Sketch of Pasturage Lands claimed by Afghans'] in Charshamba, Kaisar, Almar, Maimena and Jankara. Reference table. Scale: 1 inch to 3.75 miles. A copy printed as IB 572, August 1886, is preserved as FO 925/2021, where the title is given as above. The area shown is in Afghanistan. Annexed to Protocol no. 8, 15/27 April 1886. (2) and (3) Annexes 4 and 3 respectively to Protocol no. 11, 21 May/ 2 June 1886, both showing course of the Amu Darya (anciently Oxus) River between Kerki and Kelif, in Turkestan, Russia (now Turkmenistan). (2) 'Copied from the Russian Chromolithograph Map of Turkestan Military Circuit by Russian Topographical Department 1877 (received in 1878).' Scale: 1 inch to 40 versts (26.4 miles). In Russian and English. Kerki is spelled Karki in Russian. (3) 'Turkestan 1st edition was issued in 1868 and was superseded by 2nd edition issued in 1873.' Scale: 1 inch to 32 miles. (4) ['Kashan Valley'], Afghanistan. Reference table. Scale: 1 inch to 1 mile. Compass indicator. Signed Capitaine Kontratenko, 'membre des topographes de guerre', 10 June 1886, and W Peacocke, Captain, Royal Engineers, February 1886. Apparently extracted from Protocol no.15. A copy, printed as IB 611, from which the title of the map is taken, February 1887, is preserved as FO 925/2072 (5) Kushk River, Afghanistan. 'Part of Kushk Rud showing Ancient & Modern Canals & Existing Cultivation'. Reference table. Scale: 1 inch to 1 mile. Compass indicator. Signed Capitaine Kontratenko, 'membre des topographes de guerre', 18 June 1886, and W Peacocke, Captain, Royal Engineers, February 1886. A copy, dated February 1887, printed as IB 612, from which the title of the map is taken, is preserved as FO 925/2164. Items (4) and (5) both apparently extracted from Protocol no.15, 13 September 1886. Dimensions: (1) 41.5 cm x 60 cm; (2) 7 cm x 11 cm; (3) 11 cm x 7 cm; (4) 55.5 cm x 34.5 cm; (5) 90 cm x 37 cm.
