Description

Derbyshire. Plan showing Meadow Place, and land between Nether and Over Haddon and Youlgreave: town of Over Haddon; river and water-mills; meadows, arable fields, common, moorland; roads; granges of Roche Abbey. Field names and land ownership denoted. Buildings, cistern, gate, walls, and hurdle fences drawn in bird's-eye view. Two water-mills drawn on their side, to show their wheels in the river. No scale shown. Oriented to the north. Cardinal points shown. Endorsed in later hand: 'No. 65 Overhaddon'. Ascribed to Richard Howton, vicar of Bakewell, by E M Yates. Made by order of the Court of Duchy Chamber given on 14 February, 19 Henry VIII (DL 3/19, S1a); to illustrate claim by tenants of Over Haddon (Allen Sutton and others) to common of pasture in lands held by the Abbot of Leicester's tenant, Richard Addyshed. Related documents are in DL 1/21, O2; DL 3/18, L1; and DL 5/5, f 334.
