Description

Map of Bedford Level, Cambridgeshire (and partly in Lincolnshire): showing area between Peterborough, Coldham, Wisbech and Crowland, and north of Crowland to 'The hall': watercourses, towns, settlements; abbeys at Crowland, Peterborough and Thorney: cross at Wisbech; bloody sword and wounded human figure shown disproportionately large. Line of settlements through Holbeach and Gedney at right of map not in their true position. Buildings, bridges and boats in perspective. About 1.5 inches to 1 mile: see Owen p 92. [Oriented to the west.] North and south shown. 'Lutton' added in later hand. Endorsed in later hand: 'Holland Fenn', 'No 54 Holland Fenn'. Apparently based on MPC 1/45, though appears to be later in date, and is extended to the west, with minor alterations to layout of watercourses, and the addition of a number of features: additional place-names, including 'Holland Fen'; 'mille acras' marks a field; bridges; another boat, at Peterborough. Settlements generally shown as more substantial, amid woodland; roofs of houses coloured red.
