Description

1 item extracted from SP 12/75 (item 47). Kent: Isle of Sheppey. 'The plotte of Sherland howse in Sheppie' (endorsement): bird's-eye view of the main building at Shurland House; showing gate-house, galleries, chapel, service buildings and well, all ranged around courtyards crossed by pathways. No legends; apparently unfinished. Plain black border. No scale shown. (Oriented to the east). An endorsement in a nineteenth-century hand gives the date of the view as 1570; the view was extracted from part of the volume containing papers concerning the lease of Shurland House attributed to 1570. It is possible, however, that the view was associated with surveys made in 1572, connected with the sequestration of the property, on the grounds of its importance for the defence of the Isle of Sheppey (surveys in SP 12/87).
