Description

1 item extracted from SP 8/11 (item 60). Two maps joined at right angles, showing the course of the Meuse and Sambre Rivers. The composite map shows tributaries, woodlands, high land, place names. Large towns are shown by their outlines, with defences; smaller towns and villages by houses and churches in perspective. These vary sufficiently to suggest that they represent to some degree the appearances of the places shown. Scale: 44 cm to 'deux lieüees du pays faisant quarente mille piedz de Brabant'. (1) 'Carte Figurative du Cours de la Riviere de Meuze despuis Les ancienes limites de France jusques a la jonction de la Sambre': map showing the course of the Meuse from the old French frontier to its confluence with the Sambre (from the vicinity of Fumay, France, to Namur (now in Belgium)). Annotated: 'Cette carte ayant esté levée par ordre du gouverneur des pays bas en l'année 1660. 61. 62 et 63 pour observer les lieux propres a estre fortiffiez sur la riviere de Meuze avant l'usurpation du pays par les francois a esté tres justement tirée sur les lieux par trois ingenieurs a ce commis, et a present tres correctement coppiée sur l'original pour servir ou sa Majesté trouvera convenir'.
