(1) Admiralty chart 195: 'Plan of the Harbours and Fortifications of Valetta In the Island of Malta by Captain W.H. Smyth, R.N. ...'. Inset views: 'The Castle of S. Angelo'; 'The Castle and Lighthouse of S. Elmo'; 'Appearance of Valetta bearing S.E. 13, or 14 miles'. Reference tables. Scale: 4 inches to 1,000 yards [1:9,000]. Compass indicator. Engraved by J Walker. Published at the Hydrographical Office, Admiralty, 19 July 1823. MS additions show obstacles at entrances to Grand Harbour, Marsamxett or Marsamuscetto Harbour and Dockyard Creek. MS note: 'This Plan is attached to the Reply to Questions regarding the Defences of Malta submitted by Sir W m. Reid to Sir Houston Stewart K.C.B. April 1856. The reply is signed by Cap tn. J.C.D. Hay H.M.S. Hannibal [and Capt.] A.P. Ryder H.M.S. Dauntless'. (2) Part of Admiralty chart [2628]. Plan of harbour and fortifications at Valetta. Scale: [1:18,293]. Compass indicator. MS additions show gun ranges from moorings at Corradino and from dockyard. (3) Part of Admiralty chart [195], with MS additions showing proposed boom between Fort Ricasoli, Valletta and Point St Angelo. Dimensions: (1) 47cm x 63cm; (2) 32.5cm x 20.5cm, part of a larger sheet; (3) 20.5cm x 32cm.
