Description

3 items extracted from CO 48/457. (1) and (3) Southern Africa: Transvaal, Orange Free State ( now North-West, Gauteng, Northern, Mpumalanga and Free State provinces, South Africa). Two copies of 'Sketch [map] of Territories on the Vaal River to accompany the Award of His Excellency R.W. Keate Esquire Lieutenant Governor of Natal in the arbitration between the S.A. Republic and the Batlapin, Barolong, and Bangoakietse native tribes and Nicholas Waterboer paramount chief, Griqualand East'. The map also shows line of earlier awards and claims. Scale: 1 inch to about 20 miles. Compiled in the Surveyor General's Office from Moffat's map and sketches. Signed P C Sutherland, Surveyor General, 17 October 1871. (3) is signed additionally by Robert W Keate, Lieutenant Governor. (1) was originally enclosure number 2 in despatch number 121 of 31 October 1871. (2) Orange Free State (now Free State, South Africa): 'Map showing the Boundary line from Davids Graaf to Platberg of N. Waterboer's Territory'. Table of latitudes and longitudes of Platberg, Du Toits Pan and Davids Graaf. Scale: 1 inch to about 17 miles. Compass indicator. The map originally formed enclosure number 3 in despatch number 121 of 31 October 1871. (1) and (3) 69 cm x 47 cm; (2) 28 cm x 21 cm.
