The continent west of the Great Lakes north of about 45°N. showing a boundary line claimed by the United States as laid down in an American map published in Philadelphia, 1816, and the extent of a grant by the Hudson's Bay Company to Lord Selkirk. The grant to Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk (1771-1820) covered parts of Manitoba, North Dakota and Minnesota and was made in or about May 1811. Its purpose was to provide a colony for highland Scots. Scale: 1 inch to about 145 miles. 'True copy. Wm. Sax. D. P. Surveyor April 1818'.
