Description

3 items extracted from CO 48/509. Cape Colony: Kimberley (now in Northern Cape province, South Africa). 3 plans. (1) 'Plan No. 1. Sketch Plan of the Diamond Fields': showing mines, roads, and the scene of an explosion on 10 January 1884; on tracing cloth. Scale: 4 inches to 1 mile. Compass indicator. (2) 'Plan No. 2. Scene of the Explosion of over 40 tons of Dynamite, Powder &c. at the Diamond Fields, Kimberley, on January 10th 1884'; on tracing cloth. Reference table. Scale: 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200]. Compass indicator. (3) 'Plan No. 7. Proposed arrangement of Compound to contain 8 magazines suitable for storing explosives required by 15 mining companies or firms at the Diamond Fields, Kimberley ...': perspective view. Inset: 'Ground plan of Magazine, 28 feet x 16 feet, for storing Dynamite'. All items signed: F Schute, Inspector of Machinery, (1, 3) February 1884, (2) January 1884. Dimensions: (1) 52 cm x 65 cm; (2) 74 cm x 64 cm; (3) 28 cm x 46 cm.
