Description

3 items extracted from CO 42/695. 'Map shewing Line Of Route between Lake Superior And Red River Settlement': 3 similar maps, all of the area from about 48° to 51°N and from about 99° to 87°W, between Lakes Manitoba and Superior, showing lakes, rivers, settlements and the boundary between Canada and the United States of America. Scales: (1) 1 inch to 20.5 miles; (2)-(3) 1 inch to 10 miles. Based on information from S J Dawson's exploratory surveys and from maps in the Department of Crown Lands, Ontario; [produced] by A L Russell, Toronto; item 3 [printed] 1869. (2) lithographed and printed at the Topographical Department, War Office, 1870. Printed additions to (1) and (3) marking a road line, from Fort William (now part of Thunder Bay) in the east to Fort Garry (now part of Winnipeg) in the west, explored the Red River Expedition in 1859 and opened in 1869, and the probable route of a railway line; printed addition to item 2 marking the same road route as items 1 and 3 between Fort William and Fort Frances, and a difference route from thence to Fort Garry. Dimensions: (1) 30.5 cm x 71 cm; (2) 65 cm x 133.5 cm; (3) 77.5 cm x 139.5 cm. (1) originally enclosed with Sir John Rose's letter, 17 July 1870.
