Description

2 items extracted from FO 5/380 (folios 116 and 149). 'Map of that portion of Her Majesty's Colonies of New Brunswick and Lower Canada the title to which is disputed by the Government of the U. States with parts of the Adjacent Country The Rise & Course of the Rivers with the direction of the Highlands and their elevation above the Sea expressed in English feet fom Barometrical admeasurements to accompany a report of the investigation of that Country which the R t Hon b Viscount Palmerston... directed to be made A.D. 1839'. In upper left margin: 'Reduced copy of Map A'. Scale not constant: latitudes and longitudes shown. Insets in side margins: sections of the country between the Bay des Chaleurs and the south-eastern sources of the St John's River; and along a line due north of the source of the Chiputnaticook. Constructed by direction of Richard L Mudge and G W Featherstonhaugh. (Sgnd) J D Featherstonhaugh, Secretary and Draughtsman to the Commissioners. Engraved by James Wyld, Charing Cross East, London. Two duplicates. (1) Red ink additions define a small area between the St Francis River and the source of the Metjarmette. Originally enclosed in Lord Ashburton's despatch no 15 of 28 July 1842. (2) MS additions show the United States boundary claim, the British claim of 1820 and the 'Line of the Recent Treaty'. Originally enclosed in Lord Ashburton's despatch no 117.
