Description

30 items (enclosures to Lord Lyons' despatch no 33 Africa of 5 May 1885 to Lord Granville) extracted from FO 146/2785. The first item is unnumbered, the remainder are numbered in pencil from 1 to 29. (Unnumbered item) Prefatory 'Tableau d'assemblage des feuilles de la Carte d'Afrique... Dressée au Dépôt de la Guerre par le Capitaine du Génie R. de Lannoy de Bissy 1881'. Key to progress of production. Note on the scope and geodesy of the map. Scale: 1:40,000,000. 23 cm x 28 cm. Marked in red and blue pencil to indicate which sheets are present. (1-29) Various sheets of Lannoy de Bissy's map of Africa, showing rivers, supposed rivers, heights, towns, capitals, caravan routes, roads, railways, fortifications, tribal areas, boundaries, successive acquisitions by the Republic of Liberia, mission stations, trigonometrical stations etc. Notes on topography, history, government, vegetation, cultivation etc. Partial key to conventional signs on most sheets. Paris meridian. Orthographic projection. Dimensions of each sheet: 53 cm x 55 cm. Printed at the Zincographic Press, Dépôt de la Guerre. [Originally] published at the Dépôt de la Guerre (under the direction of Colone Perrier, Chef du Service Géographique) at various dates between 1881 and 1884: dates of pull of individual sheets are noted below.
