1 item (enclosure to despatch of 10 January 1840 from Colonel Hodges, Consul General in Egypt) extracted from FO 78/404 (folio 26). Plan of Alexandria and district, Egypt, showing the coast between the Old Fort at Aboukir and Marabut Point: military positions, defences etc. Reference table. Scale: about 2 inches to 1 mile. Compass indicator. 'Hastily survey'd and drawn by Lieut. Nugent, Alexandria, 18th. January 1840': Nugent was Count Alfred Nugent, a lieutenant in the Austrian Navy. On the dorse of the plan is a list of Egyptian and Turkish naval vessels and of forts and batteries on shore, with armament and an estimate of the numbers of Turkish landing troops and of Egyptian regular and irregular forces. A holograph copy of Nugent's report to Lord Beauvale, British Ambassador in Vienna, was also enclosed in Hodges' despatch. The discrepancy in dating was perhaps by Nugent in error.
