Description

4 items extracted from FO 371/24582 (folios 357-360). Iran and Iraq. 4 maps of the mouth of the Shatt-al-Arab River. (1) 'Persian Gulf. Shatt-al-Arab: outer bar: comparison of channels, 1827, 1890, 1922': printed. Reference table. Scale: 1 inch to about 1.25 sea miles. Compass indicator. Reprographic copy of an MS original,with MS additions, coloured, showing Eastern channel, 1890; Rooka channel, 1925-40; the low water line and one fathom contour, 1940; and a channel proposed to be dredged; reference table to additions. (2)-(4) 3 copies of 'Basrah Port Directorate. Shatt al Arab, western channel and inner bar reach, sounded August 1940 by G.L.Wilkinson': Scale: 1 inch to 2000 feet. Compass rose. [By] J H Hall for the Chief Hydrographical Surveyor, August 1940; approved by Colonel J C Ward (retired), Port Director and Director General of Navigation. MS additions, coloured, showing low water lines of October 1932, December 1934 and August 1938, 1939, and 1940, and the positions of two buoys. (2) and (3) are blueprints of the same map as (4), which is a reprographic copy of an MS original, including the low water-lines, but omitting the buoys. Dimensions: (1) 57 cm x 45 cm; (2)-(4) each 50 cm x 112 cm.
