The Department for Transport (DfT) was established in May 2002, following the de-merger of the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR), which also saw the creation of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). The main responsibilities of the Department for Transport are aviation, freight, health and safety, integrated and local transport, London Underground, maritime, mobility and inclusion, railways, roads and road safety, shipping and vehicles. The DfT is the government department responsible for the English transport network and transport matters in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (DRD and DOE) which are not devolved.
