The Ministerial Committee on Military Co-ordination carried out the functions of the former Committee of Imperial Defence, which was absorbed into the War Cabinet at the outbreak of war in September 1939.
The Committee was set-up as a standing ministerial body at the end of October 1939 with responsibility for advising the War Cabinet on the overall conduct of the war.
Meetings were initially chaired by Lord Chatfield (Minister for Co-ordination of Defence), with the three service ministers and the Minister of Supply as members, and the Chiefs of Staff as advisers. Chatfield resigned from the War Cabinet on 3 April 1940, and Winston Churchill (First Lord of the Admiralty) became chairman of the Committee, although some meetings during April 1940 were chaired by the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain.
The Committee continued until the establishment of the War Cabinet, Defence Committee in June 1940.
