Administrative / biographical background

The Defence Committee (Supply) was one of two panels of the Defence Committee (the other being Operations), which was established following the appointment of Winston Churchill as Prime Minister and Minister of Defence in May 1940, and was a successor to the Military Co-ordination Committee.

The Defence Committee (Supply) had flexible membership made up of Supply Ministers and Service representatives, and was summoned by Churchill to deal with particular crises in the supply of equipment to the armed forces. It declined in importance during the Second World War, with meetings becoming fewer, as the production and supply machinery of the Ministry of Production became established.

The Defence Committee continued after the war, being succeeded by the Defence and Oversea Policy Committee in 1964.
