Description

Middlesex: Hackney, Bethnal Green and Bow. 11 sheets of maps and plans of Victoria Park (now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets) and its immediate environs. (1) MS map of the western portion of the park, showing a proposed railway, canal and towpath, with trees in elevation. (2) Printed map of the area bounded by the Regent Canal, Old Ford Lane (now Road) and Grove Street (now Road). (3-4) Two similar printed plans showing proposed ornamental pond, also showing a museum, flowerbeds, footpaths and trees in elevation. (5-6, 8-9) Four similar printed maps showing paths, flowerbeds and trees in elevation. (7) Printed map of the park, showing trees in elevation. (10) Printed map of Captain Sotheby's property and land to be given to the Crown and to the trustees; also showing adjacent landowners' names. (11) MS map of the park showing trees in elevation and the sites of proposed public roads to the north; submitted to the Commissioner of Woods, 3 October 1846 and approved 12 October 1846. Scale: (1, 5-9, 11) 1 inch to 200 feet [1:2,400]; (2) 1 inch to 4 feet [1:48]; (3-4) 1 inch to 120 feet [1:1,440]; (10) 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200]. Compass indicators to items (3-10). [By] James Pennethorne. MS additions, in pencil, to items (6-11) showing various proposed buildings and proposed alterations to the layout of roads, drives and paths. Items (3) and (5) originally produced to accompany reports dated 18 May 1846 and 27 October 1845 respectively; [neither report is filed with these drawings].
