The War Priorities Committee was set up on 21 September 1917 under the chairmanship of Jan Smuts. Originally, it was intended as an Aerial Operations Committee to report on conditions in the aircraft industry. However at the first meeting it was decided to reconstitute it as a standing committee on all aspects of munitions programmes. It operated through various inter-departmental boards or sub-committees each dealing with a particular subject or commodity. There was also a permanent sub-committee.
The War Priorities Committee was dissolved on 17 December 1918.
