Description

Enclosure award and map of Smardale [Smardale Fell] (township in the parish of Kirkby Stephen), Westmorland. Map on two sheets. Map A covers the enclosed area only (643 acres) and shows the land before and after enclosure. Also shows well, named roads, sheep folds, land to be sold, field boundary ownership, some named landowners. Industrial land-use: limeklin. With border. Scale: 1 inch to 3 chains. Construction lines shown. By C Webster, Kendal, 1848. Map certified for accuracy, 24 May 1849. Map B covers the enclosed area and some other land (1050 acres) and shows the land after enclosure. Also shows lakes or ponds, well, woods, plantations, stinted pasture, footpaths or bridleways, some named buildings, [?]water mill. With border. Scale: 1 inch to 8 chains. Map 'copied' by C Webster, Kendal, 1848. Valuer: Crayston Webster, Kendal, Westmorland, Land Surveyor. Dimensions of maps: Map A) 149 cm x 108 cm including protrusions to right hand side and bottom of map, Map B) 49 cm x 102 cm
