Description

Asia, south-west. GSGS 2901: 'Map of Eastern Turkey in Asia, Syria and Western Persia': showing defiles, rivers, lakes, swamps, seas, wadis, ancient canals (dry); towns, villages, castles, bridges; principal routes; railways; telegraphs; boundaries. List of place name elements in right lower margin. Printed note reads: 'International Boundaries as in July, 1914'. Conical Projection with standard Parallels 32° and 40° (to nearest degree). Published by the Royal Geographical Society, 1910. [Printed by the War Office]: on 12 July 1918, Military Survey (MI4) bought the stones from the RGS in accordance with the latter's terms of 3 July 1918 (Royal Geographical Society reference M.I.4/1247). Railways inserted to Jan 1921. Area marked in MS between 40°E and 46°E and between 33°N and 38°N and entitled: 'Ethnographical Map to show Distribution of Races in Northern 'Iraq'. Coloured to show area occupied by Arabs, Yazidis, Christians, Kurds, Turks or Turcomans, mixed races. Marked to show Persian Frontier, Turco-Syrian Frontier, Iraq and Syria Frontier (according to Anglo-French agreement of 23 December 1920), British Proposal for Turco-Iraq Frontier, Turkish claim for Turco-'raq Frontier. Reference table. Formerly in Foreign Office map library.
