Italy: Sicily, Malta: 'Carte Generale della Sicilia'. Map showing rivers, hachures, towns, roads, forts, boundaries. Insets: island of Pantellaria; Malta and Gozo, flanked by pillars and surmounted by a globe, flags, trumpets, anchor, rope, and a female figure bearing a sword and the arms of Malta. Scale: 8 cm to 10,000 toises (1 inch to 4 miles). Title and scale-bars in archway above a view of a bay [?Messina] and surmounted by Prussian Royal Arms, flags and weapons. Two compass roses, one of which is surrounded by putti representing the four winds. Compiled by Baron Samuel von Schmettau, in 1719-1721, on the orders of Emperor Charles VI. Corrected by Schmettau's son, Lieutenant General F G C von Schmettau, Prussian Army, on the orders of the King and Queen of the Two Sicilies in 1800 and as a memorial to his father. Drawn by Lieutenant F M Imme, Royal Prussian Invalid Corps.
