Europe, central and south-east: map. 'General-Karte des Oesterreichischen Kaiserstaates mit einem grossen Theile der angrenzenden Länder ...'. Map showing waterways, boundaries, towns, railways, roads in area between Corsica, Bucharest, Frankfurt and Novgorod. Dedicated to the Emperor Franz Josef I. Between title and dedication is a picture of a seated woman holding a map of what appears to be the Austrian domains in 1853, surrounded by surveying and cartographical instruments, printing press, shield decorated with Austrian coat of arms, and a bust which may represent Franz Joseph I. Decorative border on each sheet. Reference table.Statistical table of towns, population, nationality, religion. Table of abbreviations. Scale bars also in Austrian, Turkish, German, French, Italian, Prussian and Russian units.17 sheets, each 56 cm x 50.5 cm; two copies of index sheet, 30 cm x 25 cm. According to the index sheet, the map should comprise 20 sheets: three appear not to have survived. Drawn by T Haselwander. Engraved by F Bruckl. Prepared and published by Captain Josef Scheda in the Militär-geographisches Institut, [Vienna], 1856.
