Description

Ukraine: Crimea: 'Seat of War in the Krimea'. Map showing hachures, roads, towns; disposition of forces around Sevastopol. Reference table to English, French, Turkish and Russian camps and defence works. Scale: 6 inches to 4 miles; Black Sea: 1.9 inches to 200 miles; Eupatoria: 2 inches to 2,000 yards. Compass indicators. Insets: 'Sketch of the Euxine or Black Sea and countries adjacent ...'; 'Sketch of Koslov or Eupatoria'; views of Sevastopol, Balaklava and Eupatoria; section of railway from Balaklava to Headquarters. Inset map and view of Eupatoria and views of Balaklava and Sevastopol have been removed, and positions of title and compass indicator changed. Lithographed by Malby and Son. Published at the Hydrographic Office, Admiralty, 21 June 1855. Main map compiled and drawn by W Lowrie. Sketch of Eupatoria by E W Brooker, 2nd Master and Assistant Surveyor, under the direction of Captain Spratt, HMS Spitfire, February 1855. Published at the Hydrographic Office of the Admiralty, 2 April 1855.

MPHH 1/231 formerly WO 78/1736, and MPHH 1/93 formerly WO 78/1366, are further versions with additional information beneath the title: 'The topography of the Khersonese taken chiefly from a survey by Lieut. [Lieutenant] Mansell and Wilkinson, and Messrs. Stokes and Brooker Masters RN [Royal Navy] under the Orders of Capt. [Captain] Spratt of H.M.S. Spitfire'. MPHH 1/231 is notably darker in colour.
