Description

'Maps of the Danube River'. Ninety-two sheets of maps, plans and sections drawn for the European Danube Commission, bound in two volumes, each measuring 55 cm x 68 cm.

(a) (1-5) five sheets (no 3 wanting, no 4 duplicated) of general plans; (6-17) Sulina branch; (18-26) St George's branch; (27-31) Kilia branch; (32-33) Toultcha branch. Reference tables and notes. Various scales. Variously drawn by C A Hartley, Captain [T A B] Spratt, Royal Navy, Robert Hansford, surveyor to the Commission, T McEneney, Lieutenant [G R] Wilkinson, Royal Navy. To accompany Hartley's report to the Commission, October 1857. Subsequently printed, some at the Ordnance Survey Office, some at the Topographical Department, War Department. For copies of the prints, see FO 925/3418.

(b) (34-42) St George's Canal. Surveyed and drawn by Captain Kopistinski and Lieutenant Aichinger, engineers, under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel de Ghilain, October 1855. Soundings revised by Wex, April 1856.

(c) (43-47, 49) Plans to accompany report by Captain Spratt on the delta of the Danube, 8 August 1856. Charts of the bars and mouths of the Sulina, St George's and Kilia branches of the Danube delta. Lithographed. Various scales. Surveyed by Lieutenant G R Wilkinson, Royal Navy, and J Stokes, master Royal Navy, assisted by Millard, master Royal Navy, and G Batt, second master Royal Navy, HMSV Medina, 1856. Lithographed by Malby and Sons. Published at the Hydrographic Office, Admiralty, 23 April 1857.

(d) (48, 50-65) Plans of the delta, showing changes in the river levels since 1830, between 1856 and 1857, soundings, sandbanks. Surveyed by Millard and Wilkinson.

(e) (66-70) Plans of the Sulina to illustrate Mr Richrath's proposal.

(f) (71-92) Plans illustrating proposals made by Mr Nobiling, Director General of Works on the Rhine.
