Description

Map 1. The Balkans: '1878-9 Plans of the Servian Boundary Commission (Bulgaro-Serbe, Serbo-Turque). Illustrating the demarcation of the new frontier under Article XXXVI. Of the Treaty of Berlin ....'. Three maps:

(1) Austrian Staff Map sheets constituting an index map. Overlay shows boundary divided into sectors, numbered according to sheets 1-21 (see below). Scale: 1:300,000. Dimensions: 133 cm x 77.5 cm; overlay 72 cm x 77.5 cm. Certified by the military delegates of Germany, France and Italy who signed the Treaty of Berlin, by Captain J C Ardagh, Royal Engineers, and by Ralph Thompson, Assistant Under-Secretary, War Office, to correspond to the map signed at Berlin, 13 July 1878. Thompson's signature verified by T V Lister, Assistant Under-Secretary, Foreign Office, 17 September 1878.

(2) Sheets 1-10: 'Commission Internationale pour la délimitation de la Serbie 1879. Croquis de la frontière Bulgaro-Serbe selon article 36. du traité de Berlin du 13 Juillet 1878'. Scale: 1:42,000. Ten sheets, plus title sheet, each 72 cm x 53 cm. Variously drawn by Sergeant P Dougherty, Royal Engineers, Corpral Evans, W Ballance, Spr Royal Engineers, and Ross of Bladensburg, of the British Army; Captain Dragomir Voutchhovitch, and Lieutenant Svetozar Stankovits, of the Serbian Army; and Secretary Sidorov, Captains Serotsinsky, Lentchevsky and Karlovitch, Lieutenant Grodsky, and Messrs Mdivani, Soudzilovsky, of the Russian Army. (Sgnd) Von Alten, Bilimek, Aubaret, S Anderson, Velini, Kaulbars, Szdnavkovich and Djevad, boundary commissioners, Belgrade, 19 August 1879.

(3) Sheets 11-21: 'Commission Internationale pour la délimitation de la Serbie 1878-9. Croquis de la frontière Serbo-Turque selon article 36. du traité de Berlin du 13. Juillet 1878'. Scale: 1:42,000 and 1:30,000 (Morava sector). Compass indicators. Eleven sheets, plus title sheet: 72 cm x 53 cm and 72 cm x 115 cm (Morava sector). Variously drawn by Sergeant P Dougherty, Royal Engineers, Corporals Evans, Logan and Hawkins Royal Engineers, Sprs Hales and W Ballance, and Ross of Bladensburg, of the British Army; Captain Dragomir Voutchhovitch, and Lieutenant Svetozar Stankovits, of the Serbian Army; Secretaries Filimonov, Kamkine, Sidorov and Zoun, and Messrs Higeosky and Vronovsky, of the Russian Army; and Staff Officers Abdul Hamid Bey, Mehmed Avni Bey, Ferid Effendi, and Lieutenant Halid Effendi, of the Turkish Army. (4). Serbia: 'Plan des environs de Prepolatz dressé par le topograph Russe M. Filimonov'. Compass indicator. Printed by the Serbian GSGS. Signed by von Alten, Bilimek, Aubaret, Anderson, Velini, Kaulbars, Jovanovits and Yahya, boundary commissioners, Belgrade, 19 August 1879. Bound in volume entitled 'Plans of the Servian Boundary Commission (Bulgaro-Serbe, Serbo-Turque). Illustrating the demarcation of the new frontier ...'. All photozincographed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1879. Enclosed in Major Anderson's despatch number 34 of 4 December 1879 (see FO 83/619). The original maps from which these prints were made were deposited at the French Legation in Belgrade.
