Montenegro, Albania: 'Map of the Montenegro ... 1836'. Scale: 6.5 inches to 40 miles. Compass indicator. Drawn in lithography by L J Hebert. Printed at the Lithographic Establishment, Quarter Master General's Office. Print of enclosure in Consul Smith Saunders' despatch number 14 of 26 May 1836 (see FO 78/287). According to Saunders, the map was given to him by a Montenegrin engineer, who claimed that it was ''the result of observations taken only last autumn, ... executed with great care and accuracy'. A copy of the print was sent by Palmerston to Lord Ponsonby in Constantinople on 6 March 1837: Palmerston's despatch is in FO 195/138, but the map was erroneously filed in FO 195/607; it is now preserved as MFQ 1/436/1.
